A Company That Keeps Transforming Itself

Signa traces its origins back to 1915, when the Jefferson Electric Manufacturing Co. was founded in Chicago. Named in honor of statesman-inventor Thomas Jefferson, the company quickly became a supplier to the burgeoning radio and automotive industries, manufacturing radio transformers and magneto lamp regulators for cars. In 1928, Jefferson merged with Chicago Fuse Manufacturing Co. and began making transformers for sign applications.

Acquired by Litton Industries in 1967, the company later merged with two big names in the ballast industry—Universal Manufacturing Corporation and Triad-Utrad—to become MagneTek Lighting Products Group in 1984. In 2001, MagneTek become Universal Lighting Technologies, Inc.

Today, Signa remains a vital part of Universal Lighting Technologies, a member of the Panasonic Group. With the power of Universal Lighting Technologies’ global resources and full R&D capabilities, Signa is positioned to continue on the cutting edge of ballast design and product engineering for years to come.
